Jedi Cosplay (Jan 22nd, 2022 - ongoing)

Background / How it began

For a long time I've been a casual or passive Star Wars fan until December 2021. When I had winter break, I watched all of The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I got through a good 30 episodes of Star Wars Rebels before my break ended. And yes, I have been watching The Book of Boba Fett.

In general, I've been wanting to get into cosplay. Every time I tried, I fell short of going the extra mile. I'd do a bare minimum casual outfit inspired by a character. Not very creative or fun to be honest. So I wanted to actually commit to a cosplay for once. From there I've been wanting to make a Jedi costume, and later a Mandalorian costume.

Jan 22nd, 2022

I got a Jedi outfit template from a friend. Apologies, as I'm not allowed to share it! That night I looked at the Rebel Legion (RL) Jedi Costume Standards (Generic), and planned out how much fabric I needed. I'm not sure if I want to go for RL approval, but I looked at it anyways. It doesn't hurt to make it as close as possible in case I decide that I want to.

RL Required List + Minimum Required Extras:

  1. Outer tunic (OT)
  2. Tabards
  3. Obi (Sash)
  4. Jedi Belt
  5. Lightsaber
  6. Lightsaber Clip
  7. Pants or skirt
  8. Boots
  9. Inner Tunic (IT)
  10. Jedi Pouches: (two or more)
  11. Food pellets
  12. Jedi Robe or Cloak (Cape)

Materials:

  • Dark Brown Cotton - Robe (6 yards)
  • Beige Cotton Gauze - Outer Tunic, Tabards, Obi (6 yards)
  • White Cotton - Outer Tunic lining, Inner Tunic (5 yards)

Went to go buy material and fabric. My poor bank account... For my generic Jedi look, I'm going with the classic Episodes I-III Obi-Wan Kenobi color scheme. A brown robe, light tan/beige outer tunic, tabards, and obi, and white inner tunic. All the fabric materials I got were cotton. However, I have to order a bit more as they didn't have enough of what I needed.

When I got home I printed out all of the template. Going to wait before I lay it out, tape, and cut that paper template. It may be a few days before I post an update.

Jan 24th - 28th, 2022

I started taping all the papers together, slowly adding one row at a time. It's a very tedious process lining up the edges of the paper together. I can only do a few rows at a time. But I finally got everything taped and cut out. My plans is to cut out the fabric before spring break. And during spring break, I put it all together.

Soon I need to start looking at how to make the Jedi belt. I'm planning on using a d-ring and clip instead of the Covertech attachment method. The plan is to make a leather wrap around the saber for decoration, but also to attach a d-ring.

Got my boots! Honestly, they can go with many outfits other than my Jedi costume.

☑ 8. Boots

Feb 16th, 2022

Got my lightsaber in the mail! I need to look at leather and leatherworking tools soon for the Jedi belt and wrap for my lightsaber. The lightsaber was on sale, and I didn't think about ordering the belt clip at the time. There may be a better one I'll find later.

☑ 5. Lightsaber

Feb 27th, 2022 and Mar 2nd, 2022

Wow, this took a long time to cut out the fabric. I know that most of the work is the prep time to create garments. We didn't have a large enough table to place down the fabric and pin the templates. We had to clear out the living room and sit on the hardwood floor. Man, it really hurt sitting on the floor. It's all done though! Soon we'll actually sew together the robes!

Mar 13th - 21st, 2022

During my spring break, I was also dog sitting in addition to sewing. I was able to finish putting together the undershirt, tabards, obi, and robe. I still need to attach hooks and eyes to the obi so that it's complete. The outer tunic is taking a lot longer than expected. I'll have to finish putting it together another time.

☑ 2. Tabards
☑ 3. Obi (Sash)
☑ 9. Inner tunic (IT)
☑ 12. Jedi Robe or Cloak (Cape)
(6/12 done)

Apr 18th, 2022

Ordered some brown leggings, the belt clip, and some D-rings for my costume. They'll be arriving on the 20th. Also ordered my food capsules! And I couldn't resist buying some kyber crystal necklaces (Consular and Sentinel).. I should be getting them around Apr 26 - May 3.
